Research findings

There is no, or insufficient provenance information known about this object from the period 1933-1945. After investigation, no sources have been found to date that can provide information to complete its provenance in the period. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.

The provenance is inconclusive: it is unknown when, how or under what circumstances a private collector, W. Hoogedijk, acquired this painting. W. Hoogedijk consigned the painting to Kunsthandel Hoogendijk in Amsterdam, which subsequently sold it to Schellenberg, director of the Kunsthalle Hamburg. Dr Schellenberg purchased this painting on behalf of or for the architect Gutschow. The painting remained in the Kunsthalle Hamburg until it was returned to the Netherlands.
