Stilleven op tafel met schedel, boeken en brieven, banier, globe en glazen bol. On a brown table is an open book with illustrations (and illegible text) some documents (also illegible) with red and white seals, a book, a sword (only the hilt is visible) a copper horn, a glass sphere, an orange-white-and-blue flag, a skull wreathed with vine-leaves, a recorder, a white-and-green patterned jug, a red earthenware oil-lamp, some matches and a globe. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance of this painting is unclear. It is unknown from whom Kunsthandel Bier in Amsterdam acquired the work. Bier sold the painting on 2 October 1940 to Kunsthandel Hoogendijk in Amsterdam. Hoogendijk then sold it in December 1940 to Hupp, director of the Düsseldorf Museum.
