Research findings

From the provenance research into the period 1933-1945, indications have emerged that suggest possible involuntary loss of ownership.

The provenance is inconclusive. It is not known how, when or under what circumstances Kunsthandel Duits, Amsterdam acquired the painting. It is not known when or under what circumstances the private collector Weigel (Berlin / Switzerland / Paris / Denmark) acquired the painting. It is not known when or under what circumstances art dealer Schönemann, Amsterdam acquired the work. Schönemann sold the painting to the Dienststelle Mühlmann in The Hague, via Dr. Plietzsch. Dienststelle Mühlmann sold the painting to J. Wilpert, Munich. It is known that during the occupation years, Dienststelle Mühlmann made purchases from looted Jewish property, such as from the Liro or from Jewish art dealers who had been placed under administration or expropriated. It cannot be determined whether this object comes from Jewish property or not, but the known practices of the buyers/dealers give reason to assume that the object may have been involuntarily lost.
