After investigation, no sources have been found to date that can provide information to complete its provenance in the period. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance is inconclusive. It is unknown who Smit was, and how, when or under what circumstances he acquired this painting. Smit sold the painting to Kunsthandel Hoogendijk in Amsterdam in 1940. Hoogendijk sold the painting to Dr Martin, director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, in July 1942.
